Illustration for Garrison Keillor’s new book

Friday, October 25th, 2013

I created a jacket illustration for his new book of poetry. I like his show a lot and have seen it here in New York a couple of times so I was delighted to work on this. Just below is the final cover and following it are cover art and a couple of cover designs I created as well.  Charles Rue Woods art directed this.

I liked the vintage mic in sketch form, but when I tightened it up it started looking like some kind of metallic critter.

Everyone agreed the bow was confusing, no longer looked like a tie. A christmas gift?

I like this one a lot, but it didn’t really fit Keillor’s image.

This is about Americana and Keillor’s quiet optimism. And his glasses. We ended up at something very close to this.

Karate Essay

Monday, October 14th, 2013

I like to write essays that are both word and picture. They aren’t really comics; the placement of panels and word balloons aren’t crucial to the idea. And they aren’t just illustrated essays; the words and pictures need to both be there or the idea would be lost. I need a name for whatever these are.

I have studied karate for any years and recently had a promotion. For promotions the candidate has to write an essay about what karate means to them at that point in their lives. So I did mine as one of these picture and I word essays.

This is part of the essay which ran to 24 pages. All that you need to know to make sense of this is that to get up to black belt you work your way through a series of colored belts. After that stripes are added to your black belt.  Shodan is a first degree black belt and Nidan is the next step up, a second degree black belt.
